  1. I think we have all done something stupid in the woods. Stupid actions are the result of overconfidence usually and this is a great podcast/reminder. One of my more “risky” adventures happened just last summer with my 19 yr old son. After a 23 hour ordeal, we got back to the car. We were tired and hungry, but no worse for wear. We were never in danger or got lost, but we were overconfident because we were ‘veteran’ climbers. Haha. We can all get in over our heads.
    thanks guys!
And buy the book – I have read it. It’s great.

    1. Thanks, Todd! Wow … a 23-hour ordeal. I’d love to hear more about it. You’re right about the role that overconfidence plays. That’s why having a 4WD truck can get you into more problems than if you only have a 2WD ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. No conversation about people doing stupid things outdoors would be complete without mentioning the relationship between rattlesnake bites and male stupidity. There is a rather comical statistic I have seen referenced in the past (see link below) that compares the location of rattlesnake bites to the gender of the bite victim. For snake bites occurring on a person’s foot or leg, the number of victims that are male is about the same as those who are female. But when rattlesnakes bite people on the hand, roughly 80-90% of the victims are men. This should surprise no one, but is a nice reminder that some gender stereotypes are probably true.
