  1. Great podcast guys. Yes fly fishing has taken me to so many wonderful places and I have been lucky to meet some awesome folks along the way. You bring up the subject of a bad experiences in a certain fly shop in the Yellowstone area. I to have had that experience in that area . My wife entered the fly shop all excited to purchase a licence so we could fish the Yellowstone for the first time. I asked the guy behind the counter how much a 3 day licence was and he snapped at me pointing up to sign on the wall that I didn’t see. The way he snapped at me and the tone crushed my excitement. Needless to say my wife and I bailed . I told the wife that blank blank should not be in that type of business at all . We did go to another fly shop and had a wonderful experience.
I also have had a bad experience with a local fly shop but now under new ownership treated completely different. Under the first owners I felt so uncomfortable every time I would visit the establishment. One day I took a new friend of mine to purchase a fly rod and and get him set up to enter the world of fly fishing. I guess we should have wore a tie and suit because we were snubed from the moment we entered . After a good amount of time we left and went to a sporting goods store and met a wonderful man who I became good friends with . Al Campbell. He used to do articles for fly anglers online . AL set him up with a nice affordable outfit and was so polite he took his time made both of us feel important. From that day forward we took our business to him . Unfortunately AL passed away and so did the service. I few years back I returned to the fly shop under new ownership. What a world of deference. You walk in all the employees are glad to see you and eager to help with supplies most important put you onto good fishing .
I chuckled when you brought up the story about the fish packed with worms and yet still took a San Juan worm. I had that experience while Brook Trout fishing in northern Maine during a large Trico hatch . I caught a Brookie that’s mouth was jammed packed with Tricos along with my Trico imitation . I showed a buddy of mine fishing with me . Both were amazed how and why the fish took my fly . Again great pod cast I could go on and on with stories of the good fly fishing folks I’ve met on this fly fishing journey in life . Such an awesome sport isn t it .

  2. I couldn’t agree with you more on the snobs who can ruin fly fishing if we let them. That story about the 14 year old being bullied by an adult man made my blood boil; it’s the kind of thing that can ruin a beginner’s enthusiasm for fly fishing and I’m glad someone stood up to the bully. Fishing is fishing and as long as the way you’re doing it is legal and ethical, it’s your business how to spend your time on the water.

  3. Ok,am super guilty about texting pictures of every trout over 18,till I started having everyone I meet on the river quick draw that phone and start flipping thru their catalog of fish, which oddly, looks exactly like mine. ALL if them,my first big fish looks just like the one I caught yesterday. So for 2018,promise,no more pictures of a fish you could care less about.
