S3:E37 When Life Gets in the Way of Fishing

Life gets in the way of fishing more than we’d like. We’ve had stretches during which we’ve fished little, and stretches that were full of days on the river. Life often gets in the way of doing what we love most. In this episode, we identify the big life obstacles to fishing and some ways to overcome them while still making good on what’s most important, whether family or work.

The Fly Fisher’s Book of Lists

We’ve published a book for regular-Joe-and-Jane fly fishers called The Fly Fisher’s Book of Lists: Life is short. Catch more fish.

One person who purchased the book called it “cliffsnotes for fly fishers.”

To switch metaphors, perhaps it’s more like a handful of potato chips. It’s an entire book of lists. The goal is to help you find practical help quickly and in an easily digestible format!

  1. The smartest thing I ever did was get my wife into fly fishing. I had been fly fishing for about a year and asked my wife if she wanted to try it. She hooked a brookie on her first cast. I never have to ask permission because she’s usually in the car honking the horn.

    1. That is pure genius. We all should be so lucky to have a spouse who is passionate about our great Cause!

  2. This episode was a mirror of itself: allegorical even. Life throws us tangents that all to often divert us from our path, even if for just a moment. The purpose we have is specific to our own journey but often not that different from the next person; family, happiness, adventure, etc. We set out to “to do a thing” and life happens; we are swept by the tangent. It is all a part of the journey and we must find those moments to appreciate the tangents and decompress; fly fishing.

  3. As usual, a great podcast!

When I “got back into fly fishing” a couple of years ago, I really appreciated my wife because although she had been a worm fisherman, she was very supportive. She would come along, read a book, or do other things.

Then, I taught her how to cast. Then, I “had to” buy her an outfit. Then, I “had to” get her her own gear.

I made her her own lanyard, and she uses flies I’ve tied. And one of my life’s most memorable moments came when she caught her first fish on a fly rod.

She is now an ardent fly fisher. Getting her started was one of the best moves I have ever made. We have a great time together, and best of all, I have carte blanche when it comes to anything that is fishing related!
