Episode 6: Gary Borger on “A River Runs Through It”

A River Runs Through It is not so about fly fishing as it is about the love for a family member when you don’t understand him or her. In this episode, we interview Gary Borger, fly fishing legend, entrepreneur, and consultant to the movie “A River Runs Through It.” Gary recounts how he changed the script from “fly pole” to “fly rod.” He tells story after story of the great moments on the set, which was filmed mostly in Montana’s gorgeous Gallatin Valley. 1. Wow how cool was that ? Great pod cast . Wonderful interview. Love the stories of how this movie came to be. The River Runs Through It is an absolute classic I’ve watched numerous times. I agree changed the world of fly fishing for many years . Some good and bad. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when the dad and sons are up on the bank sharing their success. Both sons show off their fish only to be out done by their dad. Another when the boys are confronted by the dad after destroying the boat they borrowed to go over the falls. Boys what have you done . Lol. Of course the ending was so touching as well. The list goes on . Great movie great cast.

  2. I have been a listener for the past few months and found this episode as a result of S3:E1 “Great Stuff…”

I have liked all the podcasts I have listened to so far but have especially enjoyed this episode. “A River Runs Through It” is one of my all time favorite films and there were several parallels in my life at that time. I was 9 years old when it came out in theaters but was about 12-13 years old when I first saw it. By that time I had stopped fishing with bait and loved teasing my father (predominantly a bait fisherman) about bringing along his Hills Bros. coffee can (GREAT scene). Secondly, my father is a conservative, reserved man who, when teaching me to flyfish, always told to pretend that I was pinning a Bible to my side when casting. Being a bit more adventurous I had developed my own casting method with a more open armed approach (brazen, I know). The dynamic between Paul and his parents often reminded me of my own relationship (though I have a good bit of Norman in me too).

    Tight Lines.

    1. P.S. I am also very interested in learning more about Mr. Borger and am happy to have learned about him on this episode.
